This topic is based primarily on the excellent book by Susan Ambrose and colleagues, <a rel=\"nofollow\" class=\"external text\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cmu.edu\/teaching\/news\/howlearningworks.html\"><b>How Learning Works: Seven Research-Based Principles for Smart Teaching<\/b><\/a> (2010). Jossey-Bass: San Francisco.<br \/>\nThe seven principles are:\n<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li> Students\u2019 <b>prior knowledge<\/b> can help or hinder learning.\n<\/li>\n<li> How students <b>organise knowledge<\/b> influences how they learn and apply what they know.\n<\/li>\n<li> Students\u2019 <b>motivation<\/b> determines, directs, and sustains what they do to learn.\n<\/li>\n<li> To develop <b>mastery<\/b>, students must acquire component skills, practice integrating them, and know when to apply what they have learned.\n<\/li>\n<li> Goal-directed <b>practice<\/b> coupled with targeted <b>feedback<\/b> enhances the quality of students\u2019 learning.\n<\/li>\n<li> Students\u2019 current level of <b>development<\/b> interacts with the social, emotional, and intellectual <b>climate<\/b> of the course to impact learning.\n<\/li>\n<li> To become <b>self-directed learners<\/b>, students must learn to monitor and adjust their approaches to
