It is a project of the <a rel=\"nofollow\" class=\"external text\" href=\"https:\/\/wikimediafoundation.org\/\">Wikimedia Foundation<\/a> which hosts Wikipedia and a number of sister projects, for example <a rel=\"nofollow\" class=\"external text\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikibooks.org\/wiki\/Main_Page\">Wikibooks<\/a>, <a rel=\"nofollow\" class=\"external text\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikiversity.org\/wiki\/Wikiversity:Main_Page\">Wikiversity<\/a>, and <a rel=\"nofollow\" class=\"external text\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikiquote.org\/wiki\/Main_Page\">Wikiquote<\/a>.\n<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"mw-headline\" id=\"The_InstantCommons_feature_of_the_MediaWiki_software\">The InstantCommons feature of the MediaWiki software<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a class=\"external text\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mediawiki.org\/wiki\/MediaWiki\">MediaWiki<\/a> is the free and open source wiki software which powers both Wikipedia and WikiEducator. It has a powerful feature called the <a class=\"external text\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mediawiki.org\/wiki\/InstantCommons\">InstantCommons<\/a>.\n<\/p>\n<p>The InstantCommons enables files from the Wikimedia Commons repository to be used in any MediaWiki instance where this feature is enabled. WikiEducator has enabled the InstantCommons feature, so we can use images from the Wikimedia Commons without the need to upload the file locally. This saves time, because the image metadata and licensing information is uploaded automatically when referencing a Wikimedia Commons file.\n<\/p>\n<p>In short, using the identical filename of the image from the Wikimedia Commons on WikiEducator will automatically insert the image on WikiEducator with all the relevant licensing information without the need to upload the image or edit the metadata.\n<\/p>\n<div class=\"panel iDevice\">\n\t<div class=\"panel-heading idevice-heading\">\n\t\t<div>\n\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"pedagogicalicon\" alt=\"example\" src=\"https:\/\/pacificopencourses.col.org\/edt4ol\/wp-content\/themes\/oeru-course\/idevices\/Icon_casestudy.png\">\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div>\n\t\t\t<h2>Example using puppy image from the Wikimedia Commons.<\/h2>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\t<div class=\"panel-body\">\n\t\t<div class=\"col-md-12\">\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>The following puppy image is hosted on the Wikimedia Commons at this URL: <a rel=\"nofollow\" class=\"external free\" href=\"https:\/\/commons.wikimedia.org\/wiki\/File:Small_crossbreed_puppy.jpg\">https:\/\/commons.wikimedia.org\/wiki\/File:Small_crossbreed_puppy.jpg<\/a>\n<\/p>\n<div class=\"center\">\n<div class=\"floatnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wikieducator.org\/File:Small_crossbreed_puppy.jpg\" class=\"image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Small crossbreed puppy.jpg\" src=\"\/\/wikieducator.org\/images\/thumb\/b\/b4\/Small_crossbreed_puppy.jpg\/450px-Small_crossbreed_puppy.jpg\" width=\"450\" height=\"300\" class=\"img-responsive\"><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<ul>\n<li> Based on the URL of the source image above, we can see the filename is as follows: <b>Small_crossbreed_puppy.jpg<\/b>\n<\/li>\n<li> Inserting the standard wiki markup for images on WikiEducator, re-using the <b>identical<\/b> file name, will insert the image in WikiEducator. The following syntax was used to insert the image:\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<pre><code>[[image:Small_crossbreed_puppy.jpg|450px|center]]<\/code>\n<\/pre>\n<ul>\n<li> Click on the image above to view the <a rel=\"nofollow\" class=\"external text\" href=\"https:\/\/wikieducator.org\/File:Small_crossbreed_puppy.jpg\">metadata<\/a> of this file. Note that it correctly references the source from the WikiMedia Commons, as well as all the attribution information and licensing without the need to re-type this on WikiEducator\n<\/li>\n<li> This feature will not work if a pre-existing file of the same name was previously uploaded on WikiEducator.
