It is similar to the idea of a lesson to teach a particular concept, and includes the subject matter, learning activities, and assessment activities the learners must complete. The individual sub-pages of a learning pathway correspond to the sub-components of a lesson.

Learning pathways are the building blocks for assembling full courses, or micro-courses. One learning pathway usually covers a clear concept which can stand on its own as a learning sequence, and is typically completed in 1 – 2 hours of learning effort online. A topic area within a curriculum would normally be covered by a number of “learning pathways”.

The metaphor of a pathway is used to suggest flexibility for learners to choose how they complete their learning journey.

Choose a design project

The purpose of this course is to acquire and demonstrate your skills in designing, developing, and publishing an online learning pathway using a wiki to WordPress digital publishing ecosystem. In short, you will build a partial course website containing a learning pathway of your choice that can support collaborative editing (if needed).

We recommend that you think about a potential content area you would like to focus on for this course. You will need to specify this in your learning contract, with the understanding that individual authors can change their topic area at a later date. However, choosing a topic area in advance provides an opportunity for participants who want to work in teams to self-organise in assigning individual learning pathways to team members working on the same topic area.

Consider the following requirements before choosing a content area for your project:

Scope: In this course, you are expected to develop at least five pages of online content for your learning pathway.

Curriculum level: You are free to choose any concept or topic area that is taught in your national curriculum at school or post-secondary level.

Activity-based design: Choose a concept for your learning pathway that is well-suited to incorporating a range of activities to demonstrate your skills in designing interactive activities. Avoid topics that rely on memorisation (‘rote learning’ or ‘learning by heart’) for mastery, for example, learning the alphabet.

OER development approach: There are a number of approaches you can consider:

Developing new content that incorporates existing digital OER (images, videos, text, etc which you source online)

Re-configuring existing print-based OER materials into online interactive learning materials

Converting (re-mixing and localising) existing OER online materials for re-use in your own context on this platform

Individual or team development: This course supports individuals working on their own learning pathway or small teams who choose to work on a collection of learning pathways in the same topic area.

With reference to team submissions, please note that all members of the development team are required to submit a successful acceptance portfolio. In the event that a member of the team does not qualify, those who do may continue as a team or opt to work individually to complete the course.

Team members must organise themselves – the course facilitators are not responsible for putting together team projects. However, this is an ideal opportunity for collaborative learning to work with one or more colleagues at your institution.

We encourage team members to support each other in preparing their acceptance portfolios.

Soundboard your ideas for a design project

You don’t need to think alone – share your thoughts and ideas for your design project on forums.oeru.org to get feedback from your fellow participants.
