Interactive learning materials, such as quizzes and games, foster active participation and align with UDL’s Engagement principle by motivating students through opportunities for collaboration and the ability to choose how they engage with the content. These materials support learning by turning passive study into active exploration.
For example, in your equipment safety lesson, you might give students the choice to either complete a quiz on safety procedures individually or take part in a group-based quiz activity. This provides learners with options. Some may prefer to check their understanding independently, while others may learn better through teamwork and discussion.
This section introduces two platforms designed to help you create interactive content for your trade lessons: Lumi (for building H5P quizzes and activities) and ClassQuiz (for designing game-based quizzes).

Lumi and H5P

H5P, short for HTML5 Package, is a versatile content format used to create engaging learning materials such as quizzes, interactive videos, and drag-and-drop activities. It offers a wide variety of content types, including multiple-choice quizzes, image hotspots, and interactive timelines. These materials work across devices and can be used both online and offline.
There are two common ways to create H5P content:

  • Inside an LMS like Moodle or WordPress (if the H5P plugin is installed). We are not covering LMS-based H5P creation, as many of you may not have direct access to an LMS with the H5P plugin installed.
  • Using Lumi, a free H5P editor.

Lumi is a free-to-use H5P editor, available both as an online platform (Lumi Cloud) and a downloadable application (Lumi Desktop). It lets you create H5P content on your computer and export it as HTML files for offline or online sharing. If your LMS supports H5P, you can also upload .h5p files directly to your course.

ClassQuiz

ClassQuiz is an open-source quiz platform that enables you to design, game-based quizzes and surveys that foster engagement and teamwork. Games can be played online in real time or offline using printed question sheets for collaborative learning. This flexibility makes ClassQuiz ideal for classrooms with varying levels of connectivity.

Teaching Scenario: In your equipment safety lesson, you want students to review key safety protocols in a more engaging way. Instead of using a printed worksheet, you create an interactive H5P quiz using Lumi, with drag-and-drop and multiple-choice activities. During class, students complete it individually on their devices. Later in the week, you run a team-based quiz competition using ClassQuiz, where students compete in small groups to identify hazards and recall safe practices. The friendly competition sparks excitement, encourages discussion, and reinforces learning through peer interaction.

Try It Yourself: Design interactive activities!

1. Watch the video tutorials below to learn how to use Lumi and ClassQuiz to create interactive content:

Create Interactive Content and Quiz using Lumi Design Game-Based Quizzes with ClassQuiz

2. Try both tools and create one quiz using Lumi and one using ClassQuiz. For example:

  • Lumi: Build a short quiz on safety check for a trade tool.
  • ClassQuiz: Create a game-based quiz to test safety rules.

3. Share these materials with your students.

Self-Reflection: Which tool worked best for your students and why? How did the interactive format change the way students engaged with the safety topic?

Post your reflection here. Your experiences may help others discover new ways to use interactive content in their classrooms.

If you completed Module 0, you may recall exploring quiz platforms such as Kahoot and Quizlet, which are useful for real-time engagement and digital flashcards. You can reflect on how these tools compare with the platforms introduced here. If you started from Module 1, you may want to explore Kahoot at this link and Quizlet at this link.

Remember: Kahoot and Quizlet offer free versions with limitations. Lumi and ClassQuiz, on the other hand, are completely free and open source.
