In this section, we will learn how to evaluate technologies to select the best fit for your teaching. While evaluation is ideally conducted before selecting tools, this section offers a reflective opportunity to explore assessment methods, using your equipment safety lesson as a case study for future planning. Your students are now engaging with your equipment safety lesson through your chosen LMS and collaborative tool. To ensure these technologies enhance your teaching, it’s crucial to evaluate their suitability. This section introduces methods to assess digital tools for their relevance and usability in your teaching environment, reflecting on the choices made for this lesson, and you can apply this in selecting any future tools for your teaching.
SECTIONS Model for Tool Selection
The SECTIONS model is a framework designed to evaluate tools before selection, encompassing eight key criteria: Students, Ease of Use, Costs, Teaching Functions, Interaction, Organisational Issues, Networking, and Security and privacy. Reflecting on your equipment safety lesson, you might recognise how you partially applied this model when choosing your LMS and collaborative tool. For instance, under ‘Students,’ you could evaluate whether Google Classroom matches your learners’ technical abilities; ‘Costs’ might emphasise free options like WhatsApp; and ‘Security’ ensures robust data protection, as outlined earlier in this module. To deepen your understanding, watch the following video: https://youtu.be/-W79hGvukTs?si=XGUHzHajmPSupPiM&t=391
This video explains the model in detail. The criteria are defined as follows:
- Students: Consider the demographics, technological access, and learning styles of the students you aim to reach.
- Ease of Use: Evaluate how straightforward and reliable the technology is for both instructors and learners.
- Costs: Assess the expenses involved in designing, delivering, and maintaining the course using this technology.
- Teaching Functions: Examine the educational benefits and limitations of the medium for teaching purposes.
- Interaction: Determine the level of interactivity it offers between learners and materials, learners and instructors, and among learners.
- Organisational Issues: Check whether your institution supports the use of this technology.
- Networking: Explore opportunities for connecting with subject experts and the wider community beyond the course.
- Security and Privacy: Ensure the technology provides a safe environment for instructors and students.
Now, reflect on your equipment safety lesson—how did your chosen LMS and collaborative tool support student engagement, considering SECTIONS criteria such as Ease of Use and Interaction?
